Pens and Papers | Why Do I Love Planning And Journaling?

You know what? Well, you probably know it already since I am a blogger, right? But I will tell you anyway. The reason why I love planning and journaling is rooted from my love for pens and papers. My love for writing!

As in writing – using a pen and blotting its ink into a paper, putting thoughts into words – kind of writing. Even before I got married and became a Momma, I am already someone who keeps a small notebook or journal with me all the time. When I was still in college, I used to write in my journal while waiting for our professor to arrive in class and one of my friends used to tease meΒ “Ano yan? Dear Diary?” Lol! Not everyone will understand the comfort that writing gives me. It’s a helpful activity for an OC, Introvert like me. It makes me feel at ease and orderly.

I just really love writing. I wasn’t into writing blogs that time. I have a Tumblr –Β Nostalgic Damsel – way back then (please don’t judge me by looking into my Tumblr. That’s the teenage version of me! Hahaha!). I just usually reblog things I see in my Tumblr feed. On rare occasions, I would write something to express myself but mostly, I’d rather do theΒ expressing of thoughts through journaling.

I stopped Tumblr blogging when I had my first work after college. The weekday commuting sucked out the energy in me and I barely even have time to browse nor write in my Tumblr. I also noticed that I’ve become a bit unorganised when I became a corporate employee. As if the professional work life shocked the freshly graduated from college soul in me. That’s when I’ve decided to get back to writing down notes in a mini notepad or journal. Writing down important things such tasks, upcoming events, thoughts of the day, daily expenses, etc makes me remember those a lot more compared to when I am just saving it as a reminder in my phone’s calendar. So I made my journal, my planner as well.

I loved planning since then. Each year, I would be wishing to have a customised, ready-made, planner. As a matter of fact, I get too excited when it’s already November because I know I’ll be seeing a lot of planners in bookstores. That’s when I usually doΒ window shopping and bookstore hopping. I’d like to have a look-and-feel of every planner on display. But honestly, I immediately put them down when I see the price tag. Hahaha! Some planners are way too pricey for me. I love planning, but hey I’ve got priorities, too. Lol.

One time, as part of every team’s tradition, the team I am a member of announced that we will be having a Christmas Exchange Gift. And guess what’s on my wishlist? I wished for the BDJ’s Everything Is Possible planner for 2013! And I got it, yay! Thanks to my secret Santa way back then! That was my first ever, official planner notebook and I really loved it!

I Love Planning And Journaling
I still have it with me! πŸ˜›

I even customised it to my liking by putting inspirational photos in it. It’s become my journal and planner in one notebook as I was able to write down my goals, my future plans, the habits I’d like to accomplish, and of course, the daily tasks!

I Love Planning And Journaling
That’s how driven I was towards my dreams and the things I wanted to have someday! πŸ™‚ I needed to see it every day through those pictures.

The following year, I still don’t have enough money (still have other spending priorities) to buy myself the planner that I like at that time. I tried DIY-ing but I failed to achieve the output that I want. Lol. So I went back to journaling – just plainly writing the tasks for the day and whatever happened if there’s anything I’d like to document. I tried to live a spontaneous life and true enough, that year I got pregnant with Gabriel! Lol.

It was the year 2015 when I received an SB planner as a gift from my generous colleague in the last corporate office I worked for before I became a WAHMomma. She told me that she has spare planners from acquiring stickers and she knows pretty well that I’d be able to fully utilise the notebook that’s why she chose to give it to me as a gift.

I Love Planning And Journaling

The SB planner kept me sane as the year 2015 was the year I got married and also the year that I became a Momma to my first born.

I Love Planning And Journaling
I got married on January 2015, hence the wedding plans and also financial goals! πŸ™‚

I Love Planning And Journaling
The month of 2015 when all I wanted was for Gabriel to finally come out of my tummy! Lol!

It was a pretty fast phase of my life as I transitioned from one stage to another.

Well, this year, I got myself (finally! I know right?) my very first hard earned (as I was able to pay for it using my pocket money) planner from BDJ. I chose the Belle de Jour 2016 Power Planner because of its freebies which I wasn’t able to use, unfortunately. πŸ™ I gave away some of the vouchers to my friends and family anyway.Β Sayang kasi ang discounts.

i love planning and journaling
My BDJ Power Planner 2016! And yes, my theme for this year is #STURDY2016 πŸ™‚

After some time of somehow obsessing with custom-made planners, I got tired of it. It felt like the pages became monotonous to me. No offense to the planners I previously had. There’s nothing wrong with the planners, they’re all beautiful! I do appreciate the efforts exerted to be able to come up with great ideas to be able to create lovely planners that we, women, would love!

But I guess after I became a WAHMomma, seeing the same place, being in the same scenario for most of the days, became repetitive for me. There were days that the tasks from last week are just the same as what I have to write for the current week. I found myself looking into what seem like the same page as the previous one. I guess it’s just me. I mean, most people probably go through this phase, right?

November, like I said, used to be an exciting month of the year for me as these are the days when I am giving the planner I’ll use for the next year a thought. Definitely not an SB planner, I said. Because there’s no Starbucks’ branch nearby our home and I don’t have the budget to spend money on coffee for a sticker every single day just for me to have the beautiful planner. Poor me, I know right? Hahaha! But wait, I won 14 free stickers of SB from a recently held Writer’s Forum and Blog Sharing Group MeetupΒ nga pala!

I haven’t completed the stickers yet. I’m still asking the husband to do it for me since he’s the one who goes to Makati for work every weekday. πŸ˜›

Anyway, I feel like I’m not yet sold with the SB planner as I still don’t have it physically. So I’m still looking for other planners online. As I browse for planners to use for next year, a new found friend of mine who happens to be a planner girl – Charm, introduced me to Creative Planning. She urged me to join Planner Communities on Facebook and boy, I’m instantly stoked! I’ve been thinking that if only online communities like those do exist when I attempted to DIY my 2014 planner, I wouldn’t be discouraged and overwhelmed that I might have been able to successfully execute my ideas. Maybe they do exist way back before and am just not aware. And I don’t have Pinterest yet at that time!

After browsing the groups and Pinterest, I’ve finally decided what I would try for the year 2017! Next year, the Momma will do Bullet Journaling! Yay! And I am so thrilled by the idea of it. As to why I’ve chosen to do BuJo, I’ll write about it soon! πŸ˜‰

But I have to be honest, I feel intimidated, too! I’ve been seeing beautiful bullet journals all over Instagram and Pinterest and I am already doubting myself if I can even put on a decent looking lettering font for each of the spreads that I am planning to do. I do hope so! After all, Bullet Journaling is said to be customising your notebook or journal into something you can do and you can keep up with. It basically means FREEDOM for me and I like the idea of it.

Bullet Journaling will definitely be a challenge for me as I will stray away from what I’ve become used to (in a planners point of view, it’s using custom made planners). I am going to have to get out of my comfort zone! Why do I say? I’m obviously not the craftiest person you’ll ever know. I feel insecure when it comes to arts and crafts, DIYs (the reason? More of that soon!) and anything that involves designing! It’s a weakness of mine.

The catch? I’d like to improve on it. And I think Bullet Journaling will help me achieve that. Not only will it help me become more organised, it will also allow me to get the creative juices (if ever there is. Hahaha!) out of my brain and put my ideas into action.

I am really excited about being a BuJo-list! And I think it’s a good thing to be excited about. πŸ˜€

Live. Laugh. Love. Pray.

  1. I have my own diary when I was still in college but I stopped when I started working. Wala na rin time magsulat sa pagod. hehehe! I used planner naman when I was working. Now, blogging na lang to document everything but I’m planning to have a travel planner next year, gusto ko rin magDIY ng planner. Good luck on your BuJo-list.

    1. Thanks Michi. I admire you nga, you always find time for blogging. And yes, I think travel planner suits you best kasi marami kayong travel as a family. I think there will be more of it on 2017! πŸ™‚

  2. I’m not a journal person but I do love planners. It helps put my schedule in order kasi. Katuwa because you were able to try most of famous planners offered today πŸ™‚

    1. Super helpful nga ang planner especially after I gave birth. Naging makakalimutin na kasi ako. And writing down a to-do list helps me remember things. πŸ™‚

  3. As if I’m the one writing. Haha This is so me when it comes to planners. I still have mine back from 2004, I think.mine is a combination of Journal/Devotional/planner.
Now, I really don’t have time to beautify everything. Even to put art in my journal doesn’t happen everyday.
I like Bujo, but I’ve said, I don’t have time as of now because I have 2 toddlers and a baby. πŸ™‚ paper and pen lovers here as well.
I can relate about the hello diary. Haha.
It’s really great that there are communities for our hobbies now, at least we get to share our interests without feeling awkward. Haha

    1. Haha! Were you able to join the Pinoy planner communities in Facebook? People in there are so cool and creative. Minsan naiinggit ako sa mga spreads nila. But I tend to go for simplicity so BuJo works for me. You can go for a minimalist BuJo-ing sis if ayaw mo ng maraming kung anik anik. πŸ˜€

      1. Haha.I’ll check it out. Minimalist gsto ko kse baka maubos time ko kaka gawa sa planner. Haha nkaka addict pa naman. πŸ™‚

        1. Join ka sis sa Bullet Journaling PH group. πŸ™‚

  4. My story’s different. I love to write on notebooks before I started blogging, but I never tried using a planner! Or maybe I have, for a short period of time, but never throughout the year. I have a planner which was given to me as a gift back in 2012, I believe, and di ko sya nagamit to the max talaga. So sayang. Now, for the first time, I got myself a planner. It’s the cheapest one that I got from PCBS, as in Php 85 pesos. I wanted to buy those planners/journals na magaganda talaga at sikat ang name pero for someone new to planning and organizing, I settled for the cheapest, sayang ang mahal kung di ko pa alam masyado gamitin. So there! haha. Good luck on my first attempt to using a planner. Cheers to 2017!

    1. Haha! I think what’s common between us bloggers is, of course it’s pretty obvious, we love writing! πŸ˜€ Good luck on your planner journey sis! It will surely make you a more organized mommy! πŸ˜€

      1. Thank you sis! That’s the goal. I hope I can sustain it. Mejo ningas kugon kasi ako e. haha. And yes, I agree! We all love to write, nakakamiss parin mag diary, as in yung sa notebook. Ginagawa ko parin sya minsan. lol.

  5. Since high school ako hanggang college hilig ko na talaga magsulat. I feel better if masulat ko lahat ng experience ko through out the day and also lalo na yong mga worst experienced ko. Right now I really want to buy planner but still i have notebooks pa dito na pwedeng sulatan and gawing planner sayang naman pag di gamitin.

    1. Oh, you may re-purpose those notebooks then! Most of the planner communities encourage creative planning. I find it comforting and relaxing activity, too, though I am more on pens and right now, I have washi tapes. If you look in Instagram and Pinterest, you’ll see a lot of planner inspirations in there and some of them don’t use expensive notebooks or planners at all.

  6. Oooh, my friend Janice of Planning for Pleasure is great at planners. Unfortunately, her creativity with her planners hasn’t rubbed off on me, haha. I tried to use washi tapes and all that but di ko talaga napalabas na maganda haha. But I try.I’m also trying to get a Starbucks planner. Di pa rin ako tapos, haha. But my husband is helping me with the caffeineso I can finally complete my stickers.

    1. Oh, she’s one of the bloggers I got inspired to because of her Planning for Pleasure blog series. Ang ganda ng mga gawa nya noh? Though parang di ko sure kung paano ko maa-achieve yung ganun ka-creative haha! I have washi tapes, too, but I haven’t started using it. Hahaha! I will try it maybe next year. πŸ™‚ And also, that’s why I opted for BuJo rin naman kasi ayoko ng maraming stickers and all. I think, pens and washi tapes will do na for me. πŸ˜€ I hope you complete your SB stickers na! πŸ˜€

  7. There are a lot of blogger friends I knew who are into bullet journaling. The Studyblr (study + tumblr) community is also into it. My 2016 planner turned out to be a bullet journal with all the boxes and checks. I was thinking of doing bullet journal for real next year but just this month, my boyfriend and I saw a 2017 planner in a store and I love it. Daily planners have always been so applicable to me compared to weekly planners and I’m so happy to have found another one. Although, I might always consider the bullet journal concept on my planner.

Good luck on your bullet journal, mommy Michelle! πŸ™‚

  8. I really love the idea of getting back to journaling..as I recall the last time I had a diary/journal was some 20 years ago. It was a bitter sweet moment for me. But then again, I need some motivation and organizing in my scheduling as well as goals so this post inspires me. Thanks

  9. Planning and journalizing are my love. I also started my blog because of my love to jot down anything and everything I would want to share. When I started to stay at home, I became tamad using my planner. Perhaps the baby always keeps me busy. Luckily, I won a plans and purposes workbook from the fullyhousewifed and I intend to maximize it fully. Here’s to more planning and writing!!!

    1. Yay! Congrats for winning Mommy May’s giveaway! πŸ˜€ And yes, to more planning and writing! πŸ˜€ Cheers!

  10. I am of a journal person, but I do love planning and can’t have too much or enough planners around. I just kept on buying ~ lol!

    1. Hahaha! Ang cute kasi ng notebooks, noh? Lagi ako naaakit din then naka-stock lang sa aparador. Pero now, I am utilising them na. πŸ˜€

  11. I still keep physical journals and to-do lists even if I have a tablet and all other gadgets. I just feel like there’s more soul to keeping the “real” stuff. Things you can really write on using a pen/pencil. I feel the same way with physical books.

I used to have a planner and sort of a diary back when I was highschool. I love writing as well, especially letters to my daughter, but I can’t seem to keep up with planners anymore. This year, I’m hoping to keep it updated cause its also good to jot down goals and plan. I also have a dreamboard at home where I post all my plans for the year. Thank you for posting about this. Happy New Year!

    1. Dreamboard works wonders daw talaga! I planned on creating one kaso until now, hindi ko pa nauumpisahan dahil sa sobrang pagka-busy. πŸ™

      1. Ang ginawa sa cp lang. nag collage ako ng goals ko this year then I set it as my cp wallpaper para lagi kong nakikita. Im planning on printing it πŸ™‚

  13. Ayi

I am into creative planning and journaling too πŸ™‚ Nakaka-inggit nga to see how other planner girls design their planners, but whats more important is your personal style πŸ™‚

    1. Ay, yes! I see your posts in Instagram and Twitter πŸ˜€ Ang ganda nga planner mo sis eh. πŸ˜‰

  14. I love journaling but I always get stopped in my tracks because I want to put lots of photos in it. And printing pics is not easy if you don’t have a printer handy. I’m thinking tuloy of getting a comoact photo printer.

    1. Ohh… Parang planner + scrapbook in one ang gusto mo pala sis. Go na sa compact photo printer. I am sure you’ll be able to use it since you love printing photos πŸ˜€

  15. I’m a kinaesthetic learner, and I always, always need to write when I’m in a meeting. Planners don’t really work for me because of the pre-arranged spaces. I’ve also only recently read about bullet journaling and i think that will work for me. πŸ™‚

  16. Like you, I am never without a planner, but unlike you, I just use it to jot down important dates and events to remember. I tend to be forgetful when there are lots of things on my plate, that’s why.

  17. I’m a planner-lover, too! Most of the time, I just make DIY planner and BuJo. This year, will be using the certified positive planner and a DIY BuJo for my blog-planning. You have pretty planners πŸ˜€

    1. Oh. Yan sanang Certified Positive planner ang gusto ko kaso lang na-discover ko ang BuJo. Hihi

  18. I love planners too and I love planning and journaling pero I always fail, sa umpisa lang ako nakakagawa. How I wish I can do the same as yours, para hindi sayang yung mga journals and planners, nagiging props lang at para mas organized din ang aking schedule =)

  19. I can’t function without my planners, one on top of my table, 1 for my goals, and 1 for my to-dos. They keep me sane. I am not aware na may iba iba palang klase ng journal, I just write everything that comes into my mind and put them in categories. I’ll read more about this bullet journal and maybe it will help me more in planning my year. Thanks!

  20. I’ve seen some of your planner posts on Instagram. Happy for you that you discovered a style that you love. Good luck with your Bujo journey, fellow planner girl! πŸ™‚ Happy planning. πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks sis! You’re one of those who has influenced me to try a different kind of planning. πŸ˜€

  21. May Castillo

Woah! I wish I’ll be that ‘masipag’ like you when it comes to journaling. Would you believe that there are years (yes, with an S) that I haven’t moved my planner hanggang mag-expire na! I justlove xollecting but I don’t use any. Mas nagagamit konpa ying Steno notebook ko for my notes and to-dos. My planner? Clean as new even at the end of the year! Ayoko sya dumihan! Hahaha…

  22. I never thought that I’ve been doing BUJO journaling since then! I already put away all my old planners when I decided to declutter my stuff because they eat up a lot of space. And I can really go back to having a planner kasi nagiging listahan lang sya ng mga expenses ko. He He He

  23. I like planning and journaling. I’ve been doing tis since I was in high school. around 2 years ago, I designed my own planning pages. I wanted somethign that would be apt for my needs and my goals. Soon, I will blog about this and make it available on my online shop.

    1. Well, that’s a great idea! Marami rin na ginagawa yan as business. Good luck on that sis. πŸ˜€

  24. I love journals too! But im so tamad writing sometimes hehehe.. its fun collecting journals and memes on it too!

  25. I did the bullet journaling last year and it works kahit na di ganun kaayos ang planner ko πŸ™‚ I’m going to do it again this year using my CBTL planner and will add more color and stickers para mas masaya haha

    1. I find BuJo-ing effective, too. Maganda daw yang CBTL planner. Go go go planner mommas! πŸ˜€

  26. I am not a planner person..haha. can you believe that? I am more of a Calendar-stuck-on-the fridge-type of person. But I’m trying out a planner this year.

Let me hear your precious thoughts! :)
